Abstract

Orthophthalic acid diesters of alkanols having 2 or 3 carbon atoms or of lower alkoxy derivatives of such alkanols are added to mineral pulps as frothing agents. Examples include orthophthalic acid diesters of ethanol, isopropanol and propanol, di(3-methoxypropyl) orthophthalate, di-(2-ethoxyethyl) orthophthalate and bis-(2 : 3-dimethoxypropyl) orthophthalate. Other frothing agents which may also be present include 1 : 1 : 2 : 2-tetraethoxyethane, 1 : 1 : 2 : 2 - tetranormalpropoxyethane, 1 : 1 : 2 : 2 - tetrabutoxyethane, 1 : 1 : 3 : 3 - tetranormalpropoxypropane, 1 : 1 : 4 : 4 - tetramethoxybutane and 1 : 1 : 5 : 5 - tetraethoxypentane. Collecting agents which may be used include ethyl xanthate, dithiophosphates, phosphocresylic acid,, diphenyl thiourea, fatty acids and fatty acid soaps. Copper-containing sulphidic ores, ores of lead, zinc, iron, molybdenum, nickel and gold, and coal may be treated.
