Abstract
The invention comprises xanthates of formula <FORM:0700334/IV(b)/1> where R is a saturated hydrocarbon radicle of 1-6 carbon atoms. In Examples allyl chloride is reacted with (1) carbon disulphide, methanol and aqueous potassium hydroxide; (2) carbon disulphide, n-propanol and aqueous sodium hydroxide; (3) sodium ethylxanthate in acetone; (4) sodium sec-butylxanthate in water and (5) sodium isopropylxanthate in water to produce the appropriate xanthate and in (6) butyl, isobutyl, secamyl, methylamyl and cyclohexyl 5-allylxanthates are made by the methods of (1)-(5) together with a xanthate derived from a mixture of pentanols. The compounds are used in ore flotation (see Group II).ALSO:Sulphide or precious metal ore pulps are subjected to froth flotation in the presence of a collector of formula <FORM:0700334/II/1> where R is a saturated hydrocarbon radicle of 1-6 carbon atoms. They may be used in acid circuit flotations with sulphide ores of copper. In examples (7) a ground copper ore is treated in the presence of 0.2 lb./ton of alkyl isopropyl-xanthate, sulphuric acid and cresylic acid and results compared with those obtained when the alkyl xanthate is replaced by alkyl alkyl-xanthate, propyl isopropylxanthate and isopropyl isopropylxanthate, (8) a ground sulphide copper ore is treated in the presence of sulphuric and cresylic acids with 0.2 lb./ton of alkyl methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl sec. butyl, sec. amyl, and "Pentasol" (Registered Trade Mark) xanthates and results obtained compared with those when using sodium ethylxanthate as flotation agent, (9) a sulphide and oxide copper ore is ground and leached with sulphuric acid. copper precipitated with sponge iron excess iron being removed magnetically, and the sulphide copper minerals and precipitated copper floated with fine oil and 0.2 lb./ton of allyl ethyl, methyl or propylxanthates, (10) a ground zinc ore is floated with copper sulphate, pine oil and 0.1 lb./ton of allyl isopropyl, ethyl, propyl or sec. butyl xanthates and in (11) a pyritic gold ore is floated with pine oil and 0.18 lb./ton of allyl ethylxanthate.
