Abstract
A fluorspar concentrate having a fluorspar content of at least 97% by weight is produced by preparing an aqueous pulp containing a) a crude fluorspar ore containing less than 0.1 part by weight of iron (expressed as ferrous sulphate) per 1000 parts by weight of ore and appreciable quantities of gangue minerals and metallic sulphides, b) a water-soluble iron compound in an amount such that the pulp contains 0.1 to 0.4 part by weight of dissolved iron (as ferrous sulphate) per 1000 parts by weight of ore, c) a collector for fluorspar comprising one or more saturated fatty acids or soaps thereof, alone or mixed with one or more unsaturated fatty acids or soaps thereof, in an amount up to 70% by weight of the mixture and d) at least one depressant for gangue minerals, comprising an alkali metal silicate or metasilicate or quebracho conditioning the pulp obtained by heating at its boiling point, the pH being 8.0 to 9.0 subjecting the pulp to froth flotation and recovering a fluorspar concentrate from the froth. Addition quantities of components (c) and/or (d) may be added after the conditioning step is begun, and the iron compound is preferably ferrous sulphate.
