Abstract

As depressant in the froth flotation of ores containing depressable zinc or iron is used in an a -hydroxynitrile selected from the group consisting of acetone cyanohydrin and those represented by the formula: <FORM:0859062/II/1> where R is hydrogen or a C1-6 hydrocarbon. Thus, for example, a zinc ore containing lead or copper may be floated and the tailings activated and re-floated to produce a zinc concentrate. Examples of the a -hydroxynitrile are lactonitrile, glycolnitrile and benzaldehyde cyanohydrin. Specific ores referred to are silica-pyrite, silica-pyrrhotite, lead-zinc ore and iron-bearing copper ore. Reagents used in the examples are lime, sodium silicate, soda ash, copper sulphate, zinc hydrosulphite, pine oil, fuel oil, cresylic acid, sodium ethyl xanthate, polypropylene glycol, sodium di (sec butyl) dithiophosphate, thiophosphate acid and its ammonium salt, sodium di (sec butyl) dithiophosphate, sodium mercaptobenzothiazole and diphenylthiourea.
