Abstract

738,680. Universal joints. AMERICAN FLEXIBLE COUPLING CO. March 18,1953, No. 7540/53. Class 80 (2). Diametrically - disposed dogs 9 on each of two shafts to be coupled are mutually perpendicular and are engaged slidingly by segmental members 12 which are retained in position by a ring 20. Spring loaded balls 17 disposed in each member 12 engage an annular groove in the ring 20 to locate the ring axially and also to maintain the members 12 in engagement with the dogs 9. The segments 12 are preferably made of self-lubricating metal, impregnated wood, lignum vitae or the like. In Figs. 5 and 7 (not shown), the segments 12 are retained in the ring 20 by screw heads and by a circlip respectively. The coupling permits angular and lateral misalignment and relative axial movement of the coupled shafts.
