Abstract

738,472. Idlers for conveyer belts. THOMSON, C. Oct. 19, 1954 [Nov. 2, 1953], No. 30196/53. Class 78 (1). An idler adapted to give a troughed form to a conveyer belt is formed on its outer periphery with flexible teeth or ribs which will flex in the circumferential direction to compensate for differences in the peripheral speed of the different diameter parts of the roller. In Figs. 1, 2, the roller consists of a spindle 10 on which are secured rubber rings 141, 14<SP>2</SP> ... 148 provided with teeth 15. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the roller consists of a rubber sleeve 17 formed with radial ribs 18 extending along the length of the roller, the sleeve being fixed to a tube 19 rotatably mounted on a fixed spindle. The sleeve may be built-up of two or more pieces and the ribs may extend only over the end parts of the roller. Two or more rollers may be mounted on individual axes in a single vertical plane to form a composite unit, as shown in Fig. 5, each roller comprising a number of toothed rubber rings as in Fig. 1, arranged end to end or a ribbed sleeve as shown in Fig. 3. Each roller may be cylindrical at one end.
