Abstract
738,462. Drafting textile fibres. RAPER, G. F. Oct. 9, 1953, No. 27799/53. Class 120(2). Fibres in a sliver undergoing draft between two pairs of rollers travel through a passageway formed by four surfaces which are adjustable, but which during drafting are stationary and constrict the sliver to less than its natural crosssection over the major part of the length of the zone in which the fibres are in the grip of the front rollers although none of the four surfaces extends as far as the nip of the front rollers. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a passageway is formed by a bottom plate d, an integral side plate c and a top plate e provided with two studs ell that project through a slot c<SP>11</SP> in a side plate c<SP>1</SP> to guide the top plate e when it is raised to inoperative position where it may be held by spring plungers f connected by a bar f<SP>11</SP>. During normal working, the spring plungers f hold the top plate e in operative position. Adjustment of the height and angle of inclination of the bottom plate d may be made by knobs h<SP>1</SP> that rotate eccentrics g, g<SP>1</SP>. A further embodiment, Fig. 3, has fixed side plates and a top plate e detachably fixed to them. Slidably mounted between the side plates is the bottom plate d that is supported by weight or spring- loaded levers h<SP>11</SP>, either of which may be locked to provide a pivot about which the plate d may rock. The top and bottom plates may be shaped to provide any desired longitudinal or crosssectional configuration for the sliver whilst it is being constricted or their inner surfaces may be flexible. Either the top or the bottom plate may be made in sections longitudinally, each section being separately acted upon by pressureapplying means. To accommodate irregularities of thickness across the width of the sliver, the top and bottom members may be split lengthwise into two or more sections. The width of the channel formed by the side plates may be constant or may be varied along the length of the channel. Preferably the channel unit is traversed with the roving and the movement of yielding members may initiate changes in the relative speeds and settings of both pairs of rollers.
