Abstract
729,631. Drafting textile fibres. RAPER, G. F. Jan. 8, 1951 [Oct. 8, 1949], No. 25905/49. Class 120(2). Fibres are controlled during drafting by a channel member which extends from the nip of the retaining rollers to that of the drawing rollers, and is closed on four sides that may be fixed or adjustable. In one embodiment, spaced side plates c support a bottom plate d carrying eccentrics g<SP>1</SP> mounted on spindles h in association with eccentrics g engaging with slides f to which a removable top plate e is attached. By appropriate rotation of the eccentrics g, g<SP>1</SP>, the bottom and top plates d, e may take up any desired position. In an alternative form of channel member, the top plate e may be rigidly attached to the side plates c and the bottom plate d may be yieldingly urged upwards by means of springs or weights operating through lever systems. The operative surfaces of the top and bottom plates e, d may be curved or otherwise shaped laterally or longitudinally to accommodate changes in the fibre length distribution of the sliver and may be formed of flexible material. They may also be made in two or more sections capable of independent yielding or pre-setting. The channel member may be traversed across the width of the rollers and the drafting mechanism may be so arranged that variations in sliver thickness affecting displacement of yielding elements of the channel member may alter the roller speeds and/or the roller settings.
