Abstract
738,316. Reciprocating pumps. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1954' [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 4006/53. Class 102 (1). A device for the periodic distribution of lubricant from a reservoir to a number of points on a machine, vehicle, &c., comprises plungers 15, Fig. 1, slidable in bores 14 concentrically arranged in a liner 12 mounted in the central portion 2 of a casing 1 having end portions 3 slidably mounting pistons 9 connected together by a rod 10 and subjected on their outer faces either to fluid pressure or vacuum transmitted through pipes 7 in end covers 8. The plungers 15 are formed with heads 25 engageable in recesses in the pistons 9 and so arranged that each piston engages half the plungers. The discharge ends of the bores 14 are controlled by non-return flap valves 28, Fig. 4, formed by the cutting of arcuate slots 27, in resilient annular metal discs 26 clamped between the liner 12 and the end portions 3. Lubricant is sucked into the bores 14 from the reservoir through a common inlet 18 and discharged through outlets 21, there being one to each bore, on reciprocation of the pistons 9 by the alternate connection of the pipes 7 to vacuum and atmosphere, one half of the plungers sucking whilst the other half are discharging. Alternatively, the pistons 9 may be operated by compressed air or liquid pressure. In a modification, one of the pistons is replaced by a plate member and the associated end of the casing blanked off. In this case movement of the pistons in one direction is effected by a spring.
