737,782. Treating wort. A.P.V. CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1952 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 28071/51. Class 14 (2). Wort from a mash tun 1 is heated in a heater 11, held in a vessel 14, cooled in a heat recuperator 4, e.g. by heat exchange with wort passing to the heater, hopped in a hopping vessel 21, held in sedimentation vessels 31, 35 to allow flocculation of sludge to take place, freed from sludge in a filter or separator 43, cooled again in a cooler 45 and finally collected in a fermantation vessel 46. Wort from the vessel 14 may be shunted past the recuperator through a pipe 18 to attain a desired wort temperature in the hopping vessel. The rate of evaporation at the hopping vessel and, therefore, the concentration of the hopped wort, may be controlled by a valve 27 in its vapour discharge pipe 26. The vessel 31 may hold strong wort, the vessel 35 weak wort. Strong wort issuing through a pipe 32 may be blended with weak wort issuing through a pipe 36 and the blend may be passed through a mixer 41 to attain a desired strength of wort in the fermentation vessel.
