Abstract

Sugar-containing liquids are purified by the addition of reactive magnesium carbonate, obtained by the action of carbon dioxide on a suspension of magnesia, which is converted into magnesium hydroxide by suitable substances, whereafter impurities precipitated through the nascent hydroxide are filtered off. Preferably, the reaction to obtain the carbonate is at a pH of 7.3 to 9.3 and a temperature below 55 per cent. Lime or lime-containing materials convert the carbonate to the mascent hydroxide. Alternative procedures are: (1) juice treated with lime at a pH above 10 is carbonated to pH less than 10, and the precipitate separated; (2) juice adjusted to pH 8.5 preferably by adding lime, and, while maintaining pH constant at 8.5-9.5, treated with magnesia and carbon dioxide, and then lime added, and precipitate removed; (3) juice treated with magnesium carbonate, then lime, and precipitate removed.
