Abstract

Purified glutamic acid solution is obtained from beet sugar waste by heating the waste in the presence of calcium, strontium or barium hydroxide, to convert pyroglutamic acid to glutamic acid, introducing carbon dioxide gas, separating the precipitated alkaline earth metal carbonate, electrodialysing the resultant solution, continuously withdrawing the anionic fraction, leading it through a cation exchange resin column, and eluting the adsorbed glutamic acid with an alkaline or acid solution. Aspartic acid is also stated to be adsorbed by the resin.
