A machine for chipping waste wood for the manufacture of boards comprises a rotating cutter drum 7 or disc 26 fitted with blades 17 and at intervals corresponding to the desired length of chip, with sawtoothed pre-cutters 21, the wood pieces 3 being fed to the cutters with their grain direction parallel to the length of the blades. The blades and pre-cutters are adjustably secured by wedges 19 and the precutters are mounted on springs 22. The wedges have relatively flat chip-receiving grooves 20 and the pre-cutters have teeth 23 followed by smooth ridges 24 of the same width as the chip grooves. The ridges 24 engage in the slots cut by the teeth 23 and prevent the wood being cut from over-penetrating into the grooves 20, thus leading to an undesired increase in the thickness of the chips. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the wood is fed by toothed discs 13 which are mounted on spring- or weightloaded levers 14 and are driven by chain or other means from the main drive of the machine. An adjustable serrated backing plate 6 is fitted close to the cutter drum and the top wall 9 of the shoot and the front part 18 of the housing can swing upwards to give access to the cutter drum. In the disc version shown in Fig. 6, the wood pieces are fed along a guide 29 by a plunger 33 operated by a rod 32 and an eccentric drive, the guide 29 lying off-centre to the axis of the cutter disc 26 and being fitted with a hinged lid 31.
