Abstract

577,915. Potato chippers. BRAGAZZI, L. Jan. 12, 1944, No. 653. [Class 5 (i)] A machine for cutting potatoes into chips comprises a rotatable drum 1 fitted with cutting knives 13, 14, and a holder 6 for holding the potatoes against the drum, guiding means being provided so that on rotation of the drum the potatoes are cut into chips and the chips are discharged laterally from the drum. In the machine shown the potatoes are fed to a hopper 5 fitted with a hinged flap 8 which is intermittently vibrated by a cam on the drum. The side walls of the hopper have guide ledges 5A sloping downwards to the holder 6, and the holder has a curved face 6A forming with the drum a pocket to which potatoes pass. On the drum are seven radially extending blades 13 of chip depth, and behind these blades is a cross blade 14 spaced at chip depth from the drum, such blades between them thus serving to cut the potatoes into chips. As the result of continued rotation of the drum, the chips enter discharge passages 21 bounded by side plates 23 and the blade 14, and are discharged laterally from the drum by curved plates 24 at the rear end of these passages. To prevent the passage of small pieces of potato from the spring 15 at the base of the potato pocket, the opening is normally closed by a spring-controlled pivoted shutter 16 suitably slotted for the passage of the knives 13. In operation pins 20 on the drum behind knives 13 cause the shutter to swing against the action of its springs to permit the passage of the blade 14. The drum may be rotated by a handle 4 or by power.
