Abstract

712,521. Slicing potatoes. BROOKS, E., and TWEEDY & CO., Ltd., G. March 14, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1949], No. 32045/49. Class 5 (1) In a slicing machine with a radial cutter 23 projecting from an opening in a rotated disc 19, the slice thickness is determined by an adjustable insert 26 against which a potato is pressed located in the opening of the disc. In operation a potato dropped through the opening in a feed tube 6 is pressed towards one or more radial knives 23 by a plunger 7 pressed in by a hard knob 8a. The knives 23 which may be straight or corrugated cut off correspondingly shaped slices, which fall down to a hinged shoot 56. The knives 23 are mounted to project radially or tangentially from a rotated disc 19 which rotates across the previously cut face of the potato. The slice thickness is determined by the amount of projection or by the screw adjustment in or out of an auxiliary plate or insert 26 against which the potato is hand pressed. The insert 26 may have a corrugated surface 27 to match a corrugated knife. If the insert is removed altogether the potato is cut into scallops. The feed tube 6 is mounted at one side of the flat hinged cover 5 closing the chamber 4 containing the cutting disc 19 which is belt driven from an electric motor 15. The disc 19 is held on its driving shaft 10 by an adjusting screw 22. One half of the inneredge of the feed tube 6 may be corrugated or serrated to co-operate with the corrugations 27 on the insert 26 to ensure that the cutting plate is combed after each revolution and to ensure that all the potato is cut and ejected. The back of the rotary knife carrying plate 19 may have a projection to sweep and direct the slices into the shoot 56.
