Abstract
868,208. Slicing wood. ANGLO PAPER PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 5, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 430/59. Class 145. Wood chips for making paper pulp or press boards are cut from logs by spaced grooving tools 28 having. at least one wing portion 34 which cuts across the grain to make a chip 51 which is freed from the log in the grain direction by the main cutting edge 30. The lands between the grooves thus formed are engaged by similar tools arranged in staggered fashion or by the following cutting edge 27 of a slabbing knife 26, which is slightly lower than the edges 34 so as to cut chips 52 cleanly from these lands. The wing portions 34 may be curved or straight and their leading end may be disposed slightly rearwardly, slightly forwardly or coincident with the cutting edge 30. The chips are approximately 0À001 to 0À500 inch thick and the endwise compression during formation is stated to be not more than 0À060 inch per inch of free chip length. The tools may be arranged on the outer periphery of a drum 2, Fig. 2, on the inner periphery of a drum 111, Fig. 19, on the face of a rotating disc, on a reciprocating plate or on an endless chain. The feed of the logs may be by chains having vertical or horizontal runs ; in Fig. 17, a baffle 118 leads the logs to a driven, serrated roll 119.
