Abstract

In a method of surface-treating heated metal work-pieces by diffusion of atoms or molecules from a reagent to the work-piece or vice versa, e.g. carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding, decarburizing, alitizing and inchromizing, mechanical oscillations of supersonic frequency are generated directly in the reagent in contact with the surfaces. The magnitudes of amplitude and velocity may be made to correspond with those of the mean thermal molecular movement of the reagent, which may correspond to a frequency of 20 kc/s. to 50 Mc/s. The reagent may be gaseous, liquid or a solid powder; if it is gaseous it may be supplied at low pressure. Means may be fitted in the furnace for movement of the work-pieces relative to the supersonic generator. Crystals, supersonic sirens or magnetostriction generators may be used to generate the supersonic energy.
