Abstract

Polyazo dyestuffs are prepared by heating diprimary di- and poly-nuclear aromatic diamines (the amino groups of which are separated by more than 4 carbon atoms) with nitro-azo compounds in aqueous alkaline solution, preferably in the presence of pyridine. The products give dischargeable orange shades on cotton. In examples: 4 : 41-diaminostilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid is condensed with the following substituted azobenzenes: 4-nitro-41-sulphonic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-carboxy-41-nitro, 4 - hydroxy - 3 - carboxy - 41 - nitro - 21 - sulphonic acid, 4-ethoxy-41-nitro-21-sulphonic acid, 4 - nitro - 2 - methoxy - 41 - ethoxy - 21 - sulphonic acid, 4-nitro-2-methyl-41-ethoxy-21-sulphonic acid, 4-hydroxy-41-nitro-2-sulphonic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-carboxy-31-nitro, 4-amino-2-methyl-41-nitro-21-sulphonic acid and 2-methoxy-21-hydroxy-4-nitro-51-sulphonic acid. In further examples the following pairs of compounds are condensed together: 2 : 6-diamino-naphthalene-4 : 8-disulphonic acid and 4-nitroazobenzene-41-sulphonic acid, same diamine with 4-ethoxy-41-nitroazobenzene-21-sulphonic acid, 1 : 5 - diamino - naphthalene - 3 : 7-disulphonic acid and 4-nitroazobenzene-41-sulphonic acid, and benzidine and 4-hydroxy-3-carboxy - 41 - nitroazobenzene - 21 - sulphonic acid.
