Leuco-oxyanthraquinones are obtained by heating a p-aminooxyanthraquinone, or a derivative thereof substituted by sulpho groups or halogen atoms in the #-position, 'with an alkaline reducing agent until ammonia is evolved. In examples, leucoquinizarin is obtained by boiling 1-amino-4- oxyanthraquinone or 1-oxy-2-brom-4-aminoanthraquinone with caustic soda lye and hydrosulphite, and leuco-1 : 4 : 5 : 8-tetraoxyanthraquinone is similarly obtained from 1 : 5-diamino- 4 : 8-dioxyanthraquinone, 1:4: 5-trioxy-8- aminoanthraquinone, and 1 : 5-diamino-4 : 8-dioxyanthraquinone-3 : 7-disulphonic acid.
