Abstract

Conducting silver coatings are formed on non-metallic crystals by immersing the crystal first in a surface-activating bath and then in a solution of silver nitrate in pyridine to which has been added a small quantity of phenylhydrazine dissolved in pyridine. The activating bath may be of stannous chloride in ethyl alcohol. The crystal may be repeatedly immersed in the silvering solution with intermediate washing in ethyl alcohol to increase the coating thickness or, after the first layer has been deposited, the thickness may be built up by electrolysis, using a solution of silver and potassium cyanides in anhydrous ethyl alcohol with a silver or stainless steel anode. Crystals of ethyl diamine tartrate and barium titanate are referred to.
