Abstract

An adherent layer of nickel (containing nickel phosphide) is produced on a P.T.F.E. surface by treating the surface with a solution of sodium in liquid ammonia and depositing the nickel layer on the treated surface from a solution of a nickel salt and sodium hypophosphite. In the example, a P.T.F.E. foil is degreased by immersion in acetone, immersed in a 1 per cent solution of sodium in liquid ammonia, washed with water, sensitized by immersion in a palladium chloride/hydrochloric acid solution, washed with sodium hypophosphite solution, and nickel-plated in a bath (of which two examples are given). The nickel coating may serve as an anchor coat for a further layer of the same or a different metal or of a non-metallic material; the second metal layer may be applied by chemical deposition, electrolysis, or evaporation in a vacuum. The nickel-plated P.T.F.E. may be used as the principal element of a capacitor; parts of the coating, e.g. marginal strips, may then be removed by solution in e.g. 6N nitric acid. The Specification refers also to the chemical deposition of silver on P.T.F.E. surfaces which have been pre-treated with the sodium/ammonia solution.
