Abstract

Polyester surfaces are activated by treatment with a solution comprising 0.31-0.57 mol per cent sodium dichromate, 33.4-54.3 mol per cent sulphuric acid, and the balance water, followed by rinsing with water. Treatment may be effected by immersion in the activating solution for at least 5 seconds, followed by rinsing in water and then immersing in water at 48-100 DEG C. for at least 30 seconds. Polyethylene terephthalate surfaces may be immersed in an activating solution at 40-80 DEG C. for at least 5 seconds. After rinsing in water, the rinsed polyester surfaces may be treated with an aqueous alkaline solution having a sodium hydroxide concentration of at least 2.49 moles per litre, preferably maintained at at least 80 DEG C. In a preferred method, the polyester surface is immersed in the activating solution at 70-95 DEG C. for at least 5 seconds, rinsed in water, and then contacted with the aqueous alkaline solution for at least 5 seconds, the alkaline solution having a temperature from 70-100 DEG C. Such treatment improves the adhesion properties of the surface for binders employed in magnetic oxide coatings, and for metals, e.g. copper, tin, nickel and silver, deposited by electroless techniques. Polyester surfaces of non-uniform quality may be similarly treated under more closely-controlled conditions. Surfaces so treated may then be sensitized with stannous chloride and palladium chloride solution, and a nickel layer plated thereon.
