Abstract

736,129. Apparatus for making collars etc.; sewing. TRUBENISED (GT. BRITAIN), Ltd. May 4, 1953 [May 2, 1952], No. 12319/53. Classes 112 and 141. A holding device for a fabric ply, or a number of superimposed fabric plies, from which a collar or other garment part is to be made, consists of means for securing the ply or plies at two places outside, and on opposite sides of the intended garment part contour, these securing means being movable outwardly to tension the ply or plies, and also includes locating means readily engageable with or disengagable from an appliance separate from the holding device and effective either for moving the holding device along a predetermined path relative to a sewing machine which stitches the fabric along said contour, or for otherwise determining the said contour. A holding device, Fig. 2, for a collar ply or a number of superimposed collar plies, consists of a bar 4 carrying slidable end pieces 5, 6 to which the ends of the collar ply or plies 2 are secured. The end piece 5 is spring-urged outwardly along the bar 4 to tension the collar assembly and the end piece 6 is adjustable in position along the bar 4 to accommodate various sizes of collars. Each of the end pieces 5, 6 consists of a base plate 11, Fig. 4, carrying a row of pins 14 upon which the collar ply ends are impaled, and a pivoted cover 13 spring-urged towards the pins. The bar 4 has locating means 60 adapted for engagement with an appliance either for moving the holding device along a predetermined path relative to a sewing machine or for otherwise determining the collar contour and with a device for determining the position of the fold line. The bar 4 has spring-mounted latches 62 manually retractable by push buttons 68 for securing the holding device in position in these appliances. A loading table, Figs. 9, 10, in which the ply or plies are loaded into the holding device, is provided with a pair of journal blocks 52 to receive beads 22 on the ends of the plates 11 of the end pieces 5, 6 about which the holding device may be pivotally lowered. Pins 16 on the covers 13 engage a pair of cams 53 on the loading table to lift the covers 13; a roller 18a on the bar 4 engages one of a pair of cam bars 54 whereby the holding device is positioned in a longitudinal direction, and a roller 18 on the end piece 5 engages the other of the cam bars 54 to slide the end piece 5 inwardly to a position in which the collar ply or plies may be applied, flat but untensioned, to the holding device. Specifications 689,778, 689,786, 709,621 and 725,608 are referred to.
