Abstract

750,764. Turning inside out flexible articles. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 7, 1954, No. 19877/54. Class 112. A device for inverting the edges of a piped buttonhole or other garment opening from the form shown in Fig. 15 to the finished form comprises an elongated member, to pass through the opening, with walls adapted for non- slipping engagement with the edges of the opening so that on withdrawal of the device the edges are drawn through the opening. In Fig. 15 a slit 26, with forked ends to form tabs 27, has been formed in the garment fabric 25 and piping strips 20 have been placed at each side of the slit, folded to the form shown, and secured to the fabric 25 by stitching 22. The shank 120, Fig. 10, of the turning device is angularly adjustable on base members 122 by which it is secured to a table so that it is conveniently placed for the workto be passed down over it and then removed. Secured to each side of the shank 120, with their tops at a lower level, are plates 124, 125, 126 formed and arranged so that when the work is removed, after having been passed down to the. lower part of the shank, first the upstanding edges of the piping strips pass between the shank and the plates 125 and are carried through the garment aperture by the lower ends of these plates, recesses 127 in the shank accommodating the consequent inturning of the ends of the piping stripe; then these end portions are turned through the aperture by teeth 130 on the shank 120 and plates 124, the plates 125 being recessed at 134 to provide the necessary clearance; and finally the folded edges of the piping strips, upstanding in the aperture, are carried down by the lower edges of the plates 126 to cause the piping strips to turn up and lie beneath the garment fabric, the edges of which are thereby folded in. In an alternative form, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the shank 120 is smaller in cross-section, and is surrounded by a flexible tubular member secured at the lower end to the shank and closed at the upper end to be supported by the shank; the tubular member is preferably of latex, to give a high coefficient of friction with the piping and garment fabrics, the parts of which are drawn through the aperture by frictional engagement with the tubular member.
