M. J. BORISKE PRESSING MACHINE Filed June 13, 1935 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented Feb. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 10 Claims.
' This invention relates to a pressing machine. An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character described which is useful in the manufacture of garments, and particularly useful in the formation of the garment pockets.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a pressing machine designed for the purpose of pressing back the flaps of material on each side of the pocket slit preparatory to sewing the flaps permanently to the material of the garment in the manufacture of clothing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pressing machine of the character described that may be quickly and easily manipulated, that is, of simple construction, accurate in operation, and which is very durable in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation, and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Fig. 1 shows an end view of the machine.
Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the work-receiving platform.
Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the slitted fabric to'be operated on by the machine.
Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the fabric illustrating the pocket flaps folded back in position for sewing.
Fig. 5 shows a fragmentary cross-sectional view showing the pressure plates in position to receive the fabric to be operated on.
Fig. 6 shows a cross-sectional view illustrating the pressure plates in active position.
Fig. 7 shows a perspective view of one of the pressure plates.
Fig. 8 shows a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the pressure plates in inactive, or workreceiving position, and
Fig. 9 shows a similar view showing the plates in active position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the figures, the numeral I designates a table which is supported on suitable corner legs 2. Secured on this table is a supporting framework preferably composed of the U-frames 3, 3, the cross-bar connecting the upstanding arms of the frames being bolted on to the top of the table, as illustrated in Fig. 1, said U-frames being suitably spaced apart, as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9.
On this framework is the work-receiving platform 4 having the central longitudinal slot 5 therethrough. Each U-frame 3 is provided with a central upstanding rod 6, the lower ends of the rods being supported on the cross-bars of the U-frames 3 and their upper ends being anchored to the platform 4 above.
There is a longitudinal yoke I whose ends are provided with the vertically aligned end bearings 8, 8, which slide on the corresponding rods 6.
There is a treadle 9 pivoted, at one end, to a cross-bar II] which is secured to the legs 2 at one 10 side of the table. A connecting link II is pivoted, at its lower end, to the treadle 9, and this link is fastened at its upper end to the yoke I. The link may be formed of sections bolted together, as shown in Fig. 1, thus providing for adjustments of the link in length.
Secured on opposite sides of the yoke I are the bearings I2, I3, the corresponding bearings at each end of the yoke forming a pair. In the bearings I2, there is a rod I4, one end of which is turned outwardly at right angles to the rod, and extended across the yoke forming the arm I5. In the bearings I3, there is a rod I6, one end of which is outwardly turned at right angles to said rod I6 and extended across the yoke forming an arm II, the arms I5 and I! being arranged at opposite ends of the respective rods I4 and I6, as more clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 8, and 9.
Flexible connecting members I8, I8,are connected at their upper ends to the free ends of the arms I5, I1, and at their lower ends to the treadle 9. The rod I4 has the upstanding fingers I9, I9, secured thereto and the rod I6 has similar upstanding fingers 20, 20, secured thereto.
' A pair of levers 2|, 2|, are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the upper margin of the yoke I on one side, and a pair of similar levers 22, 22, are pivoted at their lower ends to the upper margin of the yoke I on the other side, said levers 2I and 22 being in alignment with the corresponding fingers I9, 20. There are the oppositely arranged pressure plates 23, 24, which are similar in shape and construction, and one of which is illustrated in detail in Fig. 7. These pressure plates are arranged to Work through the slot 5 of the work platform 4 in a manner and for a purpose hereinafter to be described.
The ends of the pressure plates have the extended pintles 25 which ride along the" arcuate tracks 26 that are formed in the depending flanges 21 carried by the underside of the work platform 4 and secured thereto. The upper, or free, margin of each pressure plate is overturned at approximately a right angle to the 'main body of the plate forming the lips 28, 28,
ing fabric of the pocket being formed.
which work through the slot 5, and the upper ends of the levers 2|, 22, are pivotally connected to the other margins of the respective plates.
Pull- springs 29, 29, are attached, at their outer ends, to the downwardly turned margins 4', 4', of the work platform 4, and the inner ends of these springsare connected to the brackets 30, 30, which are attached to the outer sides of the respective levers 2|, 22. A coil spring 3| is connected at its lower end to the treadle 9, and at its upper end to the table I, and the coil springs 32, 32, are connected at their lower ends to opposite sides of the link H, and at their upper ends to said table.
These springs 3|, 32, normally hold treadle 9, as well as the link I l and yoke I in elevated position, and when in this position the links 2|, 22, will be held in their outward position, as shown in Fig. 5, by the springs 29, 29, with the pressure plates 23, 24, lying closely against the underside of the work platform, and the lips 28, 28, projected vertically through the slot 5. The underside of the platform 4 is provided with indentations 33 which provides spaces for hinges connecting the levers 2!, 22, to the pressure plates, as illustrated in Fig. 5, so that the main body of each plate may lie closely against the underside of the work platform.
When in this position, theslitted fabric shown in Fig. 3 may be placed on the work platform with the lips 28 projected upwardly through the slit 34. The treadle 9 may then be depressed, pulling the arms l5, I1, downwardly and operating through the link II to pull the yoke 1 downwardly also. As the arms l5, H, are moved downwardly, the corresponding rods l4, [6, will be partly rotated, carrying the free ends of fingers I 9, 28, into engagement with the outer sides of the corresponding levers 2|, 22, and forcing said levers inwardly into approximately parallel relation, as shown in Fig. 6. This will cause the outer margins of the pressure plates 23, 24, to swing downwardly and inwardly carrying said pressure plates into approximately parallel relation, as shown in Fig. 6, and swinging the lips 28, 28, outwardly, overturning the flaps 35, 35, of the fabric, and pressing said flaps downwardly-into folded position against the surround- Underneath the work platform around the slot 5, there is an electrical heater 36 which is connected with a source of electrical supply through the wiring '31 whereby the work platform is heated opposite the folded fabric. The pressure is applied for a suilicient length of time to properly crease the fabric to maintain the flaps in place until they are permanently sewed. Upon release of the treadle 9, the springs 29, 3|, 32, will return the parts to their original, or inactive position, and the formed garment pattern may be removed and another substituted for it, and the operation repeated.
The drawings and description disclose what is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by'the appended claims.
