Patented Feb. 524, 1925.
FOLDING STOOL iiivn ri n IflEKE.
Application filed February 14, am. Serial No. 692,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEOR E H. WEIDNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quaker-town, in the county of Bucks: and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stools and the like, of which the foltubular member and a series of fixed and movable collars related thereto carrying the various rods which serve as legs, supports for the platform, and braces therefor.
In the drawings filed herewith I have illustrated one specific embodiment of my invention but it is to be understood that I do not consider my invention limited to the specific embodiment so illustrated but refer for its scope to the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device in open position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my device, a portion of the platform being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device folded.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view, the device being folded.-
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view, the device being folded. I
Fig. 6 is a detail showing one of the movable collars.
My device has a central tubular member 1 open at its lower end and closed at its upper end by a cap 2 having a series of outwardly extending jaws 3 in which are pivoted arms 4 provided at their ends withbends 5 and slots 6. A collar ,7 is slidably received on the member land provided with a series of jaws 8 having cross-pins 9 therein, and a boss 10 through which passes a set screw 11 for fastening the collar 7 upon the member 1 in adjusted position. Braces 12are pivotally attached to the side of the arms 4 and are provided with bends l3 and jaws 14 which embrace the pins 9 when the free ends of the braces 12 are inserted into the jaws 8 on the collar 7. The bends 13 are provided so that the ends of the braces 12 are aligned vertically with the arms 4 so the ends can be inserted into the jaws 8 which are aligned vertically with the jaws 3 011 the cap 2.
The member 1 is also provided with a sliding collar 15 to which are pivoted legs 16, and also provided with a set screw 17 for fastening the collar 15 upon the member 1 in adjusted position. The legs 16 are provided at their bottoms with feet 18 turned inwardly to afford a substantial base and also designed to form a closure for the lower open end of the member 1 when the" device is collapsed. I provide at the lower end of the member 1 a fixed collar 19 to which are pivotally attached braces 20 pivotally attached also to the legs 16.
In order to provide a top for my device, two rods 21 carrying between them a web 22 of any suitable material are positioned upon the ends of the arms 4 by having their slotted ends received in the slots 6 of the arms 4.
It is to be particularly noted that by reason of the peculiar disposition of the jaws 3 upon the collar 2 the arms 4 are disposed as diagonals of an oblong formed by the rods 21 and the sides of the web 22. Thus it will be seen that I have provided a device in which the top when extended is an oblong instead of a square, which is particularly desirable when the device is to be used as a seat.
When my improved stool is collapsed, the web 22 may be rolled about the rods 21 and then placed within the tubular mem- I her 1, being retained therein by the top cap 2 and the feet 18 which close the lower end of the member 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a folding stool and the like, the combination of a tubular member; a closure cap at one end of said member; arms pivotally mounted on said cap; a pair of rods detachably mounted on said arms; a web carried by said rods;'a collar slidable on said tubular member; legs pivotally mounted on said collar; and inwardly turned feet on said legs adapted to provide a cover for the open end of said tubular member.
2. In a folding stool and the like, the combination of a tubular member; a spider fixed at one end of said member; arms piv otally mounted in said spider; a collar slidable on and rotatable about said member and provided With brackets; braces pivotally mounted on said arms and detachably received in said brackets; a second collar slidable on said member; legs pivotally mounted on said collar; a second spider fixed at the other end of said member; and braces pivotally attached to said spider and said legs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GEORGE H. l/VEIDNER.
