Claims. (Cl. 112-77) This invention relates to a device for making bound or piped buttonholes, and more particularly to a device of this character for use with the ordinary household sewing machine. y
In making a bound buttonhole a piece of cloth is normally sewed to the main body of material, this piece of cloth being folded upon itself from each side inwardly and the edges pulled downwardly through slots cut through the piece itself and in the material to which the piece is sewn.
The present invention relates to a device which will hold the piece of cloth in folded position above the body of material to which it is to be sewn and feed the material longitudinally of the needle of the sewing machine so that stitching may be effected along the folded piece of material at each side of the center thereof.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be of relatively simple construction and economical to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for making piped or bound buttonholes having means for supporting a piece of cloth folded upon itself at each longitudinal edge thereof in proper position to be sewn to the body of a garment, the device being so constructed that the piece of material to be sewn upon the garment may be readily inserted therein in folded condition and removed therefrom after the stitching has been effected.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device for making bound or piped buttonholes which may consist of a relatively few parts permanently secured together in hinged relation in order that the material to be sewn may be readily assembled with the device in the proper position for sewing and may be readily removed therefrom after completion of the sewing operation.
To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the material being sewed showing a further step in the process of making a bound buttonhole.
To illustrate one embodiment of the invention, I have shown in the drawings a device for making bound or piped buttonholes comprising a base plate or frame designated generally by the numeral 10. This member may be conveniently made of sheet metal and, as illustrated, consists of a at border portion 11 having a raised or up- 2,814,264 Patented Nov. 26, 1957 wardly displaced portion 12 within the border. This raised portion, as shown more especially in Figs. l and 2, is contracted or reduced in width at its forward end and at the forward end of the member 10 this portion 12 is depressed as shown at 13 so as to lie in substantially the same plane as the border 11 and is provided with'an open-ended slot 13a. Between the portion 13 and each side of the border 11 U-shaped or channel members 14 (Figs. 1 and 2) are thus formed for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
At substantially the center of the upwardly displaced portion 12 of the base plate 10 a longitudinal slot 15 is provided. At the rear of the base plate are provided aligned sleeve members 16 which may be formed by rolling the material of the plate into cylindrical form, these sleeve members lying above the plane of the border 11. Downwardly projecting prongs or teeth 17 are provided on the border portion 11 of the base plate 10 to engage the material of the garment in which the buttonholes are to be made so that the attachment will be fed along with the material by the usual feed mechanism of the sewing machine.
A yoke member, shown in Fig. 5, is pivoted to the base plate above described. This yoke member, as illustrated, may alsobe formed of sheet metal and consists of a body portion 18 having forwardly extending, substantially parallel, spaced leg members 19 projecting forwardly from the body member. Upon the body member 18 spaced sleeves 20 may be formed by rolling the material upwardly from the plane of the member 18, as'shown in Figs. 4 and 5. When this yoke member is assembled with the base plate 10, the sleeves 20 are aligned with the sleeves 16, and a pivot pin 21 inserted therethrough to pivotally connect the parts permanently together.
When the parts are assembled in this manner, the leg members 19 of the yoke lie below the raised portion 12 of the base plate as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The free ends of these leg members extendV through'the channels 14V and project forwardly from the-front edge of the base plate so that they may be readily engaged by the lingers of the user to be moved about the pivot pin 21 so as to facilitate the assembly of a piece of cloth with the device.
In the use of the device the piece of cloth 23 which is to be sewn to the material of the garment in which the buttonhole is to be made is folded about the legs 19 after the yoke member has been moved downwardly about the pivot pin 21 to open position so as to facilitate this operation. The free ends 24 of this piece of cloth are then brought upwardly through the slot 15. The attachment, with the piece of cloth thereon, is then placed over the material 25 of the garment and placed under the needle bar of the sewing machine. The free edges 24 may be folded over upon the same side of the attachment, as shown in Fig. 6, and the cloth 23 may then be sewn to the material 25, as shown at 26, this line of stitching being adjacent one edge of the slot 15.
The free edges 24 of the material are then folded toward the other side of the attachment and a second line of stitching 26a (Fig. 7) may be made adjacent the other edge of the slot 15. It will be seen that the leg portions 19 of the yoke member are thus enclosed within the folds of the cloth 23 by the stitching 26 and 26a.
The sewing operation having been completed, the yoke may be swung downwardly away from the base plate 10 and the attachment removed from the material by sliding the latter off the free ends of the legs 19. Thereafter the edges 24 of the material 23 may be drawn downwardly through slots cut through the materials 23 and 25, as shown in Fig. 7.
It will `be apparent from Fig. 4 of the drawings that the leg members 19 lie below the upwardly displaced portion` 12 of thevbase plate so that they will be above the plane of the lower surface of the edge 11 and not prevent this surface from resting upon the material of the garment in which the buttonholes are to be made.
`While I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that it is not to be limited to all of the details shown, but is capable of modication and variation within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device for making bound -buttonholes comprising, an elongated base plate having tlat edge portions and its central portion displaced upwardly from the plane of the edges thereof along a 'considerable portion of its length toprovide a downwardly facing cloth-receiving recess, and an elongated slot provided in said portion, a pair of guide members hinged to the .plate at one end thereof and extending along the undersurface of the plate within said recess, one adjacent each side edge of said slot, with their free ends terminating adjacent the other end of the base plate.
2. A device for making bound buttonholes comprising an elongated base plate having flat edge portions and its central portion displaced upwardly from the plane of the edges thereof along a considerable portion of its length to provide a downwardly facing cloth-receiving recess, an elongated slot provided in said portion, a pair of guide members hinged to the plate at one end thereof and extending along the undersurface of the plate within said recess, one adjacent each side edge of said slot, with their free ends terminating adjacent the other end of the base plate, and means on the underside of the base plate to engage and locate the free ends of said guide members.
3. 'A device for making bound buttonholes comprising an elongated base plate having llat edge portions and its centralportion displaced upwardly from the plane of the edges thereof along a considerable portion of its length to provide a downwardly facing cloth-receiving recess, an elongated slot provided in said portion, la pair of guide members hinged to the plate at one end thereof and eX- tending along the undersurface of the plate within said recess, one adjacent each lside edge of said slot, with their 4 v free ends terminating adjacent the other endof the base plate, and the upwardly displaced portion of the platel being provided with downwardly facing channels adjacent the free ends of said guide members in which channels said guide members are received.
4. A device for makirigvboundbuttonholes comprising an elongated base plate having at edge portions and its central portion displaced upwardly from the plane of the edges thereof along a considerable portion of its length to provide 'a downwardlyffacing cloth-receiving recess, an elongated slot provided' -in vsaid portion, a pair of -guide members hinged to the plate at one end thereof and extending along the undersurface of the .plate within said recess, one `adjacent eachside edge of said slot, with their free ends terminating adjacent the otheraend of the base plate, said guide members being disposed below the upwardly displaced portion of the plate and 4above the plane of the lower surfaces'of the edges.
