Abstract
A polysiloxane rubber is made by mixing a heat-curable polysiloxane (see, for example, Specifications 594,481, 618,453 and 640,067) with a filler comprising gamma alumina of particle size less than 100 millimicrons, and preferably with a curing agent, and curing the mixture by heating, e.g. at 255 DEG to 480 DEG F. Curing agents specified are benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, zirconyl nitrate and boron hydrides, and may be used in amount of 0.1 to 8.0 by weight of the siloxane. The compositions may also contain other fillers such as a -alumina, hydrated alumina, silica aerogel, diatomaceous earth, calcium carbonate, iron oxide, talc, lithopone and carbon block, e.g. in amount of 0.01 to 1.5 parts per part of g -alumina, and zinc oxide (as additive). Examples are given showing comparative physical characteristics of silicone rubbers filled with g -alumina and with other fillers. The products may be used for electrical insulation, gaskets and shock absorbers.ALSO:Gamma alumina, for use as a filler in silicone rubbers, may be made (1) by vaporizing aluminium chloride by heating, e.g. with natural gas, the water from the combustion of which hydrolyses the aluminium chloride vapour, which at 500 DEG F. is dehydrated and converted into uniform particles of g -alumina having an average size of 20 to 40 millimicrons and a surface area of 40 to 130 square metres per gram; or (2) by hydrolysing aluminium chloride in the vapour state with high temperature steam, the hydrolysis being effected at 500 DEG F.
