Abstract

Tertiary-butyl cumyl peroxide is used as vulcanising agent for rubber-forming siloxanes comprising at least 95% mol of R2SiO units and up to 5% mol of RSiO 3/2 and/or R3SiO 1/2 units, in which each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical, at least 75% of the radicals being lower alkyl or haloalkyl radicals and sufficient radicals being vinyl radicals so as to give a vinyl: Si ratio of from 0.0002:1 to 0.05:1. Fillers usually added are: silicas (natural, fume, aerogels and xerogels), oxides of Ti, Fe and Zn, Al and Zn silicates, CaCO3, glass frit and C black. Pigments, plasticizers, compression set additives &c., may also be added. The compositions can be cured at atmospheric pressure at temperatures of at least 100 DEG C. Examples are given. Uses: for making gaskets, electrical insulation and baby bottle nipples; and for vibration damping and extrusions. U.S.A. Specifications 2,460,795 and 2,481,052 are referred to.
