735,239. Electroluminescence. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 13, 1952 [Nov. 14, 1951], No. 28647/52. Class 39 (1). An electroluminescent cell has two opaque conducting layers 11, 13 enclosing the electroluminescent layer 12, one conducting layer 13 being etched, scratched or cut to a pattern or indicia as in an illuminated panel or clock face. Zinc sulphide activated by copper or silver and suspended in alkyd resin and cellulose nitrate is the electroluminescent material; the conducting layer 11 is evaporated aluminium or a thin film of silver paste; and the layer 13 is of evaporated aluminium, tin, silver, gold or copper. The phosphor is suspended in a dielectric medium, e.g. an alkyd resin, and the two materials have preferably the same index of refraction.
