Abstract

737,596. Electroluminescence. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 27, 1953 [Feb. 29, 1952], No. 5544/53. Class 39 (1). An electrolumescent cell comprises a single crystal 10 of one or more of the substances zinc sulphide, zinc selenide and cadmium sulphide with copper, silver, manganese or phosphorus as activators, the electrodes 11, 12 comprising coated layer or metal plates transparent or opaque. The crystals are obtained by slow sublimation of the materials in an evacuated vessel, two or more substances being co-crystallized in periods greater than 48 hours. The highest response is obtained when the electrodes are orientated with the field at right angles to the unique crystal axis. A number of small individual crystals with associated contact electrodes may be combined in a single lamp. Specification 716,159 is referred to.
