Abstract

735,144. Sampling liquids. WHESSOE, Ltd. June 4, 1954 [June 5, 1953], No. 15571/53. Class 106 (5). A device for use in sampling liquids stored in bulk comprises an openmouthed vessel 2 and two flexible suspension members 8, 9 connected to points near the top and bottom of the vessel respectively so that the vessel can be turned mouth up or mouth down by pulling and releasing the suspension member 9 which passes through a bore in the other member 8. The vessel is.held in a brass cage or shell 1 by a brass plug 3 provided with a bayonet connection and a pad 4 of neoprene or other resilient material. A brass tube or rod 7 is connected by a pivot pin 6 to the shell or cage 1 and inserted in one end of the member 8, which is in the form of a polythene tube, the member 9, which is in the form of a steel cable, passing through an aperture in the wall of the tube or rod 7. In use, the vessel 2 is filled with water and lowered in upright position into the storage tank until it reaches the depth at which it is desired to extract the sample, whereupon the cable 9 is pulled to invert the vessel and thus allow the water to be replaced by the liquid in the tank, which may be petrol. The cable 9 is released to permit the vessel to revert to its upright position before the sample is raised.
