In a swash - plate pump, each cylinder b has an enlargement e in which operates an enlargement f of the plunger c. The chambers e are connected by passages g and are filled with liquid so that when some of the pistons move inwardly, the other pistons are moved outwardly to maintain them in contact with the swashplate d. Springs i may be provided to assist the outward movement. Alternatively the chambers e may be provided by recesses in the pistons sliding on projections in the cylinders. The cylinder block a may rotate or be stationary.
