Abstract
734,564. Cooling toothed gearing. FLENDER, A. F., [trading as FLENDER & CO., A. F.]. Oct. 2, 1953 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 27138/53. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXXIV] A two-part gear box 1, 2 is provided with a tube 3 having one or more series of outlet apertures from which cooling oil, supplied by a gear pump 5 or a piston pump, is sprayed on to the two inner longitudinal walls of the box, the oil falling to a sump 6 from which it is conveyed to a cooling system, preferably outside the gear box, before returning to the pump 5. In a modification two spray tubes are provided, one for each wall of the gear box. The spray tube may be replaced by a spray or jet nozzle or a sprinkler. It is stated that the oil also serves as lubricant for the gearing. The Specification refers to prior art wherein a gear box is provided with double walls having ducts through which cooling air is blown.
