733,700. Spinning yarns; bobbins. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR, Ltd. Nov. 9, 1953 [Sept. 16, 1952]; No. 23203/52. Drawings to Specification. Classes 120(2) and 120(3). Prior to the commencement of the filling of a bobbin with yarn, a few turns of the yarn are lapped around the barrel of the bobbin and a " tag-end " is formed by wrapping a piece of yarn around two or more projections, such as the driving pins, which extend upwardly from the bobbin support, and then severing the yarn by external means to free it from a preceding filled and recently doffed bobbin. The passage of the yarn from the barrel to the projections may be via guides on the bobbin base or an attachment thereto such as a flanged shell mating therewith ; such guides may be one or more annular grooves, or inclined grooves which may be helical or helicoidal and extend partially or completely around the base and comprise one or more turns, the ends being flared to provide yarn entries: additional frictional yarn-holding devices such as clips, serrations, or pins or friction material housed in notches or recesses, on the upper surface or edge of the base or an annular attachment thereto may be provided. The tag end may be secured during spinning by retaining devices such as one or more notched screws each extending above the surface of the yarn support : spacing bosses or washers may be used to ensure a clearance between the bobbin and its support to enable entry of the wrapped end of yarn.
