Abstract

733,696. Gasifying oils and like liquid fuels; washing gases. HEURTEY, L. M. C., and HEURTEY, P. O. A. July 31, 1952 [Jan. 17, 1952; March 31, 1952], No. 19354/52. Class 55 (2). In a process for gasifying liquid fuels such as oils by means of a gasifying agent containing free oxygen the liquid fuels are deposited on an inert granulous support and gasified in the manner of a solid carbonaceous fuel, the inert support being circulated along a path lying partly or wholly within a gas producer vessel and extending within such vessel from a charging zone to a reaction zone and impregnated with the liquid fuel either externally or internally of the producer vessel. As shown in Fig. 1 a producer 1 contains a bed of a granulous support 4 impregnated with a liquid fuel to be gasified and gasifying agents are fed into the bed through a port 8. The inert support is withdrawn from the bed by a rotary grate 5 and falls into a sealing pot 14 which contains the liquid fuel. The impregnated support is carried by a conveyer 16 to a hopper 12 and recharged to the producer. Gases are led off through an outlet 10 and the lower part of the producer is in the form of an annular boiler 3. As shown in Fig. 2 the support is circulated within the producer by means of a hollow conical stirrer 21 and the liquid fuel is sprayed on to the material through a burner fed with an excess of the fuel over the combustion air whereby the fuel is preheated before admission to the producer. The process may be intermittent and divided into blow and run periods and the gases may be collected separately. On leaving the producer the gases pass through a purifying plant which extracts for possible reuse in the producer liquid fuel which is entrained in the gaseous products. The gases are first passed through a spray of oil thrown up by a rotating paddle 28 and then into chambers 31 and 34 divided by partitions 32 and containing nozzles 33 which have a constricted portion in which the gases are sprayed. A suction device 36 draws the gases into a chamber 38 where they are further sprayed by nozzles 37 and pass through a chamber 40 similar to chambers 31 and 34, and finally into a filter chamber 41. The filtering medium in the chamber 41 may conveniently consist of the material forming the inert support.
