[Also in Group VI] A tobacco tamping device in combination with a flint and wick type lighter comprises a stem pivotally or slidably secured to or in the lower end of the lighter casing and a tamping heel on its opposite end, means being provided to lock the stem and heel in an extended or retracted position with respect to the lighter casing. In one arrangement a U-shaped plate 13, Fig. 9, which surrounds the wick assembly 5 when in the inoperative position, is attached to a pair of arms 11 located in recesses 8 at one side end of the lighter and pivoted at the bottom of the lighter casing 2. Projections 20 formed on the inner faces of the arms 11 engage grooves 21 formed on the lighter casing 2 to lock the tamping device in the operative or inoperative position. In an alternative arrangement a spindle 23 of a tamping device 22 is formed with a projection 31 and slides in the bore of a tube 25 secured within the lighter casing 2, Fig. 6, or attached to the filler plug 32, Fig. 4, in which case the tube 25 is enclosed by a pointed sleeve 37; or the tube may be mounted as an extension 42, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, at the side of the lighter casing 2. The projection on the spindle 23 engages a groove 27, 29 and 30 formed in the bore of the tube 25 so that the tamping device can be locked in the extended or retracted position by partial rotation of the device to engage the projection 31 in the circumferential portions 29 or 30 of the groove. The end piece of the tamping device may be formed by a rim joined by radial spokes to a central boss, Fig. 8 (not shown).
