Bundles of logs &c. are suspended from a runner on an overhead ropeway by a carrier 1 from which is suspended a sling 35 normally embracing the bundle and provided with means for releasing it so that the bundle drops out of balance on to a normally idle sling 8 and is thereby tipped and deposited. The sling 35 has an eye 36 at one end through which passes a button 38 supported in a recess between a pair of jaws 12, 13 carried by a cross-member 4 on the carrier 1. The movable jaw 13 is mounted on a plate 14 pivoted at 15 to the member 4 and is maintained in position by a part 18 of a bell-crank lever engaging a recess 16 in the plate. The lever is pivoted at 21 and has an arm 19 with an abutment 20. Release of the jaw is prevented by a lever 23 mounted on a pivot 24 and having an eccentric 25 which abuts a stop 17 on the plate 14 when the lever contacts a stop 26. When the lever 23 is moved to contact a stop 27, the eccentric is moved from the stop 17 so that when the abutment 20 is struck at the discharge point the member 18 moves from the recess and the jaw is free to pivot. The button is thus released and under the load passes through the eye 36; the weight of the load is then taken by sling 8 which allows the load to pivot to discharge. Initially the load is placed over the sling 35 in a ship. The button is pushed through the eye and a choker 42 on a chain is placed between the eye and button. The sling is then attached to the hook of a crane and transported to a lift truck. The forked end of the load arm of the truck is engaged beneath the button and is moved to the carrier where the button is engaged by the jaws 12, 13. The choker 42 is removed, the eye 37 is placed over a hook 43 on the crossbeam 4 and the chain of the choker is placed through the hook. The lever 23 is moved to engage the stop 27 by an abutment on the ropeway supports. In a modified form of carrier instead of the sling 8, chains are used attached to the carrier and to sling 35.
