Abstract
The hydrogen sulphide and/or sulphur content of the gaseous effluent from plants for producing sulphur from hydrogen sulphide is reduced by oxidation to sulphur dioxide with gaseous oxygen at a temperature of 150-400 DEG C. and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of precipitated alumina. More particular temperatures are 150-300 DEG C. and 225-275 DEG C. The alumina may be commercial activated alumina having a surface area of 280 square metres per gram. The gaseous effluent may be first treated, at the temperature of 150-400 DEG C., with bauxite containing iron. Specification 733,059 is referred to.
