Abstract

1330487 Treatment of waste gases; sulphur BRITISH GAS CORP 27 Oct 1971 [27 Oct 1970] 51061/70 Heading C1A Sulphur is obtained from a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide by contacting the mixture in a reactor with a catalyst comprising oxides of cobalt and molybdenum. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier such as bauxite, corundum, active alumina, silica, kaolin, powdered brick, an alkaline earth metal oxide or mixtures thereof. The cobalt oxide is preferably present in amounts of 1-4%, and the molybdenum oxide in amounts of 11-16%, both by weight of the total weight of the catalyst. Any carbon dissulphide or carbon oxysulphide present in the gas stream may be be converted into hydrogen sulphide by steam in the presence of the specified catalyst composition. The process is particularly applicable to Claus kiln effluents. Any hydrogen sulphide remaining may be eliminated by washing with a solution of sodium vanadate and the sodium salt of anthraquinone disulphonic acid (Stretford process) or by passage over zinc oxide; the last traces of sulphur dioxide may be removed by washing with sodium carbonate solution.
