Abstract

Metal caps for lamps are composed of aluminium (including alloys of aluminium) and both the exterior and interior surfaces of the caps are provided with an adherent layer of substantially non-porous aluminium oxide to prevent corrosion. According to one method of forming the oxide layer the cap is immersed for 3-5 minutes in a solution of crystalline sodium carbonate, anhydrous potassium chromate and distilled water maintained at a temperature of 90-100 DEG C. After washing, the oxide layer is sealed and hardened by immersion in a solution of sodium silicate and distilled water maintained at 90 DEG C. and the cap is again washed. In another method the cap is first etched by immersion in a solution of hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and distilled water and after washing is immersed in a solution similar to that used in the first method plus sodium metasilicate. The oxide layer is sealed and hardened as before. In a further method a solution of anhydrous sodium carbonate, anhydrous sodium chromate, crystalline disodium hydrogen phosphate, and distilled water is used and the oxide layer is sealed as in the previous methods.
