[Also in Group XXIX] A gas turbine c driving a compressor a for boosting the pressure in a long distance gas main is driven by gas tapped off for low pressure consumption from a main III. The tapped quantity passes through a heat exchanger b supplied by a combustion chamber g fed through an ejector h with gas from the exhaust side of the turbine c and pre-heated air from gas coolers d and e. A conduit p and a cooler f enable gas from the turbine to be re-circulated to the compressor a to compensate for fluctuations in the load on the main III. By means of control systems m, n, o and r, the quantities of air and gas flowing through the ejector h are controlled by the pressures in mains II and III and the intake pressure of the turbine c while the quantity of re-circulated gas is controlled by the intake pressure of the compressor a. To prevent large fluctuations in the heating value of the gas from producing excessively high temperatures in the gas entering the turbine the combustion chamber and the heat exchanger may be combined and a cooler interposed between them. If the' heating value is constantly higher than that required in the main III the tapped gas may be subjected before expansion to an incomplete combustion process to which air is supplied from the cooler d by a second compressor coupled to the turbine c.
