In a liquid fuel atomizer of the spill type having a fuel discharge orifice 11 controlled by a valve member 10 opened by the pressure difference between the inlet and spill fuel pressures, the valve member 10 has a spindle 5 acted upon by a push rod 6 connected to a spring-loaded piston 7 which is acted upon by fuel supplied to the atomizer through an inlet 13 to hold the push rod 6 clear of the end of the valve spindle 5 and the valve member 10 is free to open the orifice 11, the spring 8 moving the piston 7 to close the orifice 11 when no fuel is supplied. In operation, the fuel supplied through the inlet 13 passes through a passage 14 into spaces between a sleeve 2 of square outer cross-section and a surrounding cylindrical member 3, and thence through tangential ports 12 into the swirl chamber to discharge through the orifice 11. Excess fuel is returned to the spill passages 17, 18 through straight grooves 16 in a plug 19 integral with the valve member 10. The members 2, 3 are held against the atomizer body 1 by a cap nut 4.
