Abstract
730,577. Hat-blocking devices. HILYARD, F. V., and BETTS, F. W., [trading as ALUMINIUM HAT BLOCK & LIGHT CASTING CO.]. April 20, 1953 [April 30, 1952], No. 10835/52. Class 63. In a hat-blocking device a male die or pan 6, Figs, 1, 2, which co-operates with a female die not shown, is carried by a hollow cylinder 7 slidable within a fixed collar 2 having an external contour corresponding to the desired size of head opening and formed with a peripheral groove 22 to enable the hat material carried by the pan 6 to be secured to the collar 2 by string, so that when the pan 6 is moved down over the outer surface of the collar 2, the material is stretched and carried up inside the pan to form the head opening of the hat. The cylinder 7 is supported by a cam 17 which engages a strap 18 extending across the mouth of the cylinder 7 and which is secured to a spindle 20journaled in a fixed base 1 supporting the collar 2, the spindle being provided with a handle 21. A lever 24 is pivoted to the cam 17 at 25 and a bent-over portion 26 engages the strap 18 after a predetermined downward movement of the pan 6, so that further rotation of the cam pulls the pan 6 downwardly to stretch the hat material, in which position it is secured by an adjustable latch member 27 pivoted to the base 1 and adapted to engage a stud 29 on a lever 30 on the spindle 20. A removable crown die 16, Fig. 1, on the base 1 co-operates with an undersurface of the pan 6 to form the front portion of the hat brim. Specification 626,352 is referred to.
