It will be understood that the member I3 is formed from a metallic casting so that by heat transfer from the heating element I B, the surface of the member I3 will be heated, and to the greatest extent near the toe portion thereof.
The heel-former member I8 is contoured to the shape of the heel section of a slip-last upper, and is carried on a bar I9, which is slidably mounted at one end in a slot 2U formed in the top face of the bracket 1, and at the opposite end in the slot 9 in the bracket 8. To facilitate the mounting of the bar I9, the slot 28 is open at its upper end and is closed by a pla-te 2l secured by bolts 22 to the top face of the bracket 1.
Since it is contemplated that the machine may be adapted for widely varying sizes of slip-last uppers, both the members I3 and I8 are designed to be readily replaced @by corresponding mem-bers. but of different dimensions and contours. Likewise, since the variation in length from toe to heel of the slip-last uppers may be accommodated on the machine, the heel member is made adjustable upon the bar I9, and, for this purpose, the bar I9 may be conveniently provided with a series of spaced openings 23 therethrough so that the member I8 may be locked in different longitudinal positions, with respect to the bar I9, by a key 24 extending through openings 25 in the walls of a slot 2B formed in the bottom wall of the member I8.
After the heel-forming member .I8 has been adjusted on the bar I9 at an appropriate longitudinal settingfor the selected length oi the upper, it may be protracted or retracted toward and from the forepart-forming member I3 by the sliding movement of the bar I9 in its mounting. Thebar I9k is actuated to its extended or protracted adjustment by a strong expansion spring 21 mounted upon a rod 28, the'front end of which is affixed to a depending lug 29 carried by the lower face of the bar I9. The rod 28 extends forwardly through an opening 30 in the lower part of the bracket 8. The spring 28 bears against the front face of the bracket 8 at one end and against the inner face of the lug 29 at the other end. The spring is designed to exert a strong pressure forcing the bar I9 to its protracted position, and thereby moving the heel-forming member outwardly from the forepart-forming member with substantial force.
The -bar I9 is moved in the opposite direction by mechanical connections which include a lever 3i pivoted on a pivot pin 32, which extends between the walls of the slot I8 in the rear end of the base plate or table 6. The upper arm of the lever 3| has a pin and slot connection 33 with a link 34, which has a pivotal yconnection with a clevis 28a, attached to the rear end of the rod 28.
The lower arm of the lever 3I is actuated by a treadle operated linkage which comprises a foot lever or treadle 35, pivotally supported on a lpivot 35, adjacent to the lower end of the pedestal 2. The foot lever operates a pull rod 31, which has an adjustable pivot connection 38 with the foot lever at its lower end and a pivot connection 39 with one arm of a bell crank lever 40. The lever 48 is pivotally supported on a pivot pin-4I mounted in the head section 3 of the pedestal 2. The other arm of the bell crank lever 48 is connected with the lower arm of the lever 3l by a link 42, having a pivot connection 43 with said arm at one end, and with the upper arm of the bell crank lever by a pivot connection 44 at the opposite end.
Since the tendency of the spring 21 is to actuate the linkage by a resilient pull on the upper arm of the lever 3| the parts will normally be in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the heel former I8 is protracted and the foot lever 35 raised. Upon the initial depression of the foot lever 35, the linkage is actuated to move the heel-former member I8 toward the forepartformer member I3 to the position illustrated in Fig. 6. Upon a further depression o1 the foot treadle 35, the linkage will assume the position illustrated in Fig. 8, which is the position of the operating parts of the machine when it is adjusted to receive the slip-last upper.
In order to wipe the toe area of the slip-last upper into place over the toe portion of the forepart-forming member I3 to shape it, a wiping device is provided, which device includes a barrel member 45 which is mounted for swinging movement on trunnions 46 supported on the walls of the slot I8 in the rear end of the plate 6, as best seen in Fig. l0. It will 'be noted, by reference particularly to Fig. 8, that the rear end of the base plate or table 8 is extended downwardly to form a bracket mounting 41 for the support of the trunnions 46, constituting the pivot for the barrel 45.
In the lower portion of the interior of the barrel 45 is an expansion spring 48, which is held in position by a screw plug 49 that threads into a threaded opening in the lower end of the barrel 45, thereby providing means for adjusting the tension of the spring 48. The screw plug 49 may be locked in position by a key 50 after adjustment.
Seated for sliding movement in the upper portion of the barrel 45 is a push rod 5I. This push rod has a vertical slot 52 therein, which slot is positioned in the lower section of the rod but does not extend through the lower end. The spring 48 abuts against the lower end of the push rod 5I and tends to actuate it upwardly. A roller 53 is supported on a pin 54, extending transversely of the walls of the slot near the lower end thereof, the purpose of which is to constitute an abutment for the lower edge of an arm 55 which extends outwardly from the lever 3I. In the normal position, the push rod 5I is fully protracted from the upper end of the barrel by the spring 48 because, in this position, the arm 55 does not exert pressure on the roller 53, and the spring 48 is free to act to raise the push rod.
On the initial depression of the foot lever, the lower edge of the arm 55 impinges against the roller 53 and forces the push rod 5I downwardly in opposition to the spring 48, This is the position of the parts most clearly illustrated in Fig. 7.
On further depression of the foot treadle, the end of the arm 55 contacts with a cam face 58 formed on the upper wall of a lug 51 formed on the wall of the barrel 45 adjacent to the base of the slot 52. This action is best illustrated in Fig. 8 from which it will be observed that, upon full depression of the foot lever, the end of the arm 55, by cam action with the cam face 56, swings the upper portion of the barrel 45 to the right, in opposition to the tendency of a contractual spring 58 attached at one end at 59 to the barrel 45 near its upper end, and to the bracket 8 at 50 at the other end of said spring.
Obviously, when pressure is partially released on the foot treadle, the parts will rst return to the adjustment shown in Fig. '7, when the cam action between the end of the arm 55 and the cam face 56 is released. It is to.A be understood that.. it-is; contemplated that.. the, box. toe insert d is ofa fabric material=l impregnated. with a thermo-plastic material which, when heated, will set to form.
Before the parts have been set, and when assembled, as rst described, the sock lining around the toe section tends to pucker because of the inability, without further forming, to force the box toe insert into the space between the sock lining and the extreme toe portion of the upper.
After the upper has been mounted, as illustrated in Fig. 8, partial pressure on the foot lever is released, and the barrel 45 swings to a vertical position, as illustrated in Fig. '7. In this position, the wiping and forming plate 62 is below the plane of the forepart-forming member i3, but in vertical alignment therewith. This position is illustrated in Fig` '7, l
Upon further release of pressure on the foot treadle, the spring 21 forces the heel-former element I8 away from the forepart-forming member I3 and thereby stretches the upper lengthwise, causing it to form around the forepart-former member I3. It will be understood that, during this step, the thermoplastic box toe'insert is heated suiciently to form and set in place in the toe of the upper, and, as the wiping plate is raised, it wipes the toe area of the upper and, in effect, provides a pressure member exerting pressure on the outer'surface of the toe area of the upper and thereby forcing the box toe insert into position in the toe of the upper. In `a machine for forming closed slip-last up-pers having a box toe insert formed and adhered by'the application of heat, comprising a base, a forepart-forming member insertable in the forepart of the upper and conforming to the inne'r contour thereof, means for exerting a stretching force on said upper' when mounted on said forming member to conform the upper thereto and to set said box toe insert, a wiping plate movable vertically with respectV to the toe portion of said forepart-iorming member for wiping said toe section of the upper over said forming member, and mechanical means for moving said wiping plate vertically in respect of said forepart-forming member while said member remains stationary.
3. In a machine of the class described, a base plate, supports carriedby said base plate and.
relatively movable with respect to each other, a forepart-forming member and a heel-forming member carried by said supports respectively, aV
resilient means for protracting said supports from each other, manipulative means to impart relative movement to said supports to retract said form-v ing mem-bers toward each other, and a wiping device comprising a plunger rod, a: wiping plate mounted on said rod movable into and from a position adjacent to the toe of said forepart-forming member, and manipulative means for moving said plunger rod to bring said wiper plate adjacent to the toe section of said forepartforming member.
4. In a machine of the class described, a base plate, supports carried by said base plate and relatively movable with respect to each other, a forepart-forming member and a heel-forming vmember carried by said supports respectively,
means for protracting said supports from each other, means to impart relative movement to said supports to retract said forming members toward each other, a wiping device -comprising a plunger rod, a wiping plate mounted on said rod movable into and from a position adjacent to the toe of said forepart-forming member, means for operating said plunger rod in coordination with said means imparting relative movements to said supports.

In a machine of the class described, a base plate, supports carried by said base plate and relatively movable with respect to each other, a forepart-forming member and a heel-forming member carried by said supports respectively, resilient means for protracting said supports from each other, manipulative means to impart relative movement to said supports to retract said forming members toward each other, in combination with a wiping device comprising a plunger rod, a wiping plate mounted on said rod for movement into and from a position adjacent to the toe of said forepart-forming member, manipulative means for moving said plunger rod to bring said wiper plate adjacent to the toe section of said forepart-forming member, and means for swinging said support out of the vertical plane of the toe section of said forepartforming member when said supports are in retracted position.

In a machine of the class described, a base plate, supports carried by said base plate and relatively movable with respect to each other, a orepart-forming member and a heel-forming member carried by said supports respectively, means for protracting said supports from each other, means for moving said supports to retract said forming members toward each other, in combination with a wiping device comprising a plunger rod, a plunger plate mounted on said rod to and from a position adjacent to the toe of said forepart-forming member, a support for said plunger rod, and means moving said support into alignment with the toe section of said forepartforming member when said supports are protracted, and means moving said support away from the plane of alignment with said forming member when said supports are moved to retracted position.
7. In a machine of the class described, a support for a shoe upper, a wiping plate curved to conform to the toe section of said support, a pivoted carrier for said wiping plate, mechanical means for imparting to said carrier arcuate and vertical movements whereby said carrier is moved into the vertical plane of the upper support and moved vertically in respect thereof to contact the toe end of said upper support, and moved in the opposite direction in respect of said upper sup- -port and moved angularly away from the vertical plane of the toe portion of said support.
