Abstract

A concrete mixer drum 16 is fixed to a shaft 14 rotatably journalled in a trunnion 11 carried by an offset bracket 10 from a hollow shaft 9 which is rotatable on a drum rotating shaft 17. The axis of the shaft 17 passes through or near the centre of gravity of the drum and makes an acute angle with the shaft 14, the drum being tiltable about this axis by means of a hand wheel 22<SP>1</SP> on the hollow shaft 9, little effort being required to tilt the drum since the centre of gravity of the drum moves only a short distance during movement of the drum between the mixing and discharge positions. The angle which is defined by the axis of the drum in the mixing and discharge positions is less than the angle through which the drum must be turned about the drum rotating shaft 17 to bring it from one of said positions to the other. The drum rotating shaft 17 is driven by an engine 20 through a belt or chain drive 21, and is coupled to the drum 16 by means of a pinion 18 on the shaft 17 and a toothed rim 19 on the base of the drum. The direction of rotation of the drum may be such that the engine torque assists in moving the drum from one position to the other at least in that direction in which the greater force is in practice required to effect this movement. The drum assembly may be turned about the axis of tilt through a full 360 degrees such that the tilting of the drum can always be effected in such a direction that it is assisted by the engine torque. A releasable catch 23 is provided for retaining the mixing drum in its mixing position and for arresting the movement of the drum when it reaches the discharge position.
