Abstract

Glass filament bundles formed by extruding molten glass through a number of fine orifices are coated as the filaments are extruded with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble cellulose derivative and/or an alginate. The coating solution may also contain a surface tension reducing agent and a mineral or vegetable oil. The cellulose derivative, which may be hot-water or cold-water soluble, is preferably free from salts and may be methyl cellulose, methylethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl-cellulose, methyl and ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, a water-soluble salt of a cellulose ether carboxylic acid, a sodium salt of a sulphuric acid ester of cellulose, cyanethyl cellulose or sulphoethyl cellulose. The alginate may be sodium or ammonium alginate and the surface tension reducing agent may be an alkyl sulphate, an aryl or alkyl-aryl sulphonate or an ethylene oxide condensation product of a fatty alcohol or fatty acid containing 10-15 carbon atoms, e.g. stearyl alcohol.
