Abstract
Artificial fibres are obtained by extruding an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol containing gelatine, glue, a soap, Turkey red oil, or a mixture of two or more of these substances, in an amount insufficient to induce gelation of the solution, into a coagulating bath comprising an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt. The addition of gelatine as other specified substance to the spinning solution renders it more stable and less liable to gelatinize when subjected to mechanical shock or friction during filtration and transportation at relatively low temperatures, e.g. 25-39 DEG C., and the spinning operation may be effected with less interruption and with the production of fibres of greater uniformity in their properties. In examples, polyvinyl alcohol obtained by alkali saponification of polyvinyl acetate is dissolved in water with a small proportion of gelatine, Turkey red oil or Marseilles soap. The solution is extruded into a saturated solution of sodium sulphate at 45 DEG C. The spinning solution may contain 17 per cent. of polyvinyl alcohol and 0.3 per cent. of gelatine, soap or Turkey red oil.
