Abstract

730,103. Windows. SQUIRES, J. G. Oct. 23, 1952 [Oct. 23, 1951; May 17, 1952], No. 26663/52. Class 20 (3). A window for minimising breakage, fragmentation, and flying glass in the event of explosive blasts &c. comprises a sash frame 1 having a large glass panel 2 affixed therein and a number of strong flexible plastic strips 5 adhesively secured to the panel 2 'and secured at their ends to the frame 1 by an adhesive, or by staples 9. The strips 5, opaque, translucent or transparent, may be formed from conventional flexible plastics and if they are to simulate wood, lead, stainless steel, &c., appropriate pigments are incorporated to give the desired external appearance. A reinforcement, preferably of glass is incorporated in the mullion, the glass being embedded in the form of strands, or string 10, or as a woven fabric of fibrous glass. The strips 5 can be made by extruding the plastic with the fibrous glass, or by laminating the glass fibres with the sheets of plastic, the laminae being cut to shape. The strips 5 are preferably arranged on the inside of the window.
