Abstract

729,427. Edge-runner mills. WINGET, Ltd. July 11, 1952 [July 13, 1951], No. 16727/51. Class 59. In a mill comprising a head 7 rotatably mounted within a pan 1 and having a plurality of rollers 8 coupled thereto so as to be caused to travel round the pan upon rotation of the head, the rollers are connected with the head by linkage mechanism which is movable relatively to the head and the linkage mechanisms or parts thereof are movable relatively to each other, the arrangement being such that any one roller is capable of upward and downward movement without necessarily producing an up and down or tilting movement of any other roller. As shown in Fig. 2, each roller is mounted on a stub shaft 9 the inner end of of which is connected with a bracket member 10 which is connected to the head 7 by means of two pairs of equal and parallel links 13. The stub shafts may be arranged with their axes in a common diametral line or may be offset, e.g. by means of spacing sleeves 33, Fig. 3, so that the axis of each shaft is parallel to but slightly in front of or behind such diametral line. The head 7 may be provided with arms 35, Fig. 3, which support scraping ploughs 36, 37. Compression springs 11 are interposed between projections 38 on the bracket members and bolts 14 screwed in a cross member 15 mounted above the head. Downward movement of the rollers 8 is limited by means of projections 17 on the bracket members 10 engaging the upper ends of bolts 16 screwed in projections on the head 7. The links may be arranged tangentially instead of radially. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the upper links are longer than the lower links so that the rollers tilt slightly as they move upwardly and downwardly in the pan. The tilting could, however, be obtained by arranging the links so as to be inclined to each other. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the upper pairs of links are replaced by a leaf spring which is rigidly connected at its centre to a support on the head. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the upper pairs of links are replaced by a single pair of longer links which connect opposite bracket members and are arranged to work in vertical slots formed in guide arms projecting upwardly from the head. Specification 692,703 is referred to.
